Porto Puppet Theatre (Portugal)

Kitsune is a tribute to life, to reconnecting with simplicity, play, love, and the pleasure found in the small everyday tasks. It is a tribute to remembering without remorse and to reconciliation, but also to rediscovering the possibility of saying goodbye: to look death in the eye, to serve it hot soup and shake its hand. Kitsune is a visual symphony of tabletop puppets that uses the bunraku technique to unpack a reflection on death, which inevitably leads to a reflection on life, on being alive, and on the ancient ritual of meeting and accepting death as part of the natural cycle.

Founded in 1988, Porto Puppet Theatre focuses on unconventional perspectives on puppets and rethinks the understanding of puppet theatre as a poetic and imaginative language that evokes contemporary life. The theatre is constantly looking for new ways to create puppets on the border between classical techniques and kinetic objects, and its performances are conceived at the intersection of dance, visual arts and music. In 2013, the theatre opened a puppet museum in Porto to mark its 25th anniversary.
